June’s Issue of the Month: Ever been between crime reporting and snitching?

Side note: To make discussion even easier, we have moved our Issue of the Month section directly to this blog!

This Issue of the Month revolves around a topic many youth deal with when they witness crime and violence. First, watch this video, a speech by Terry Allen Jones, our National Training Director, at the Agents of Change Summit that took place recently in Broward County, Florida:

Like Terry said, young people have to be aware about a lot of things, and oftentimes with being aware of our surroundings come tough decisions to make. Tell us about your experiences with crime reporting vs. snitching, and the decisions you’ve made to deal with the dilemma.

So tell us, what is the difference between a ‘snitch’ or a person who is a responsible citizen? Is this word ‘snitch’ a legitimate word or was a negative conatation placed on it by those who would rather scare and intimidate rather than do what is right?

“Snitch” sounds bad and “Witness” sounds good. I guess it depends on point of view more than anything. To a criminal you’re a “Snitch”.

Witnesses are put at risk because our court system wants a person to be able to know who’s accusing them – because our court system basically is trying to do everything opposite what the witch trials did.
Thank you for posting this video and bringing this issue to our attention

Carlajane… Your response might have been decent but you then overshadowed it with the unauthorized link you attached. But getting back to your “response”, let’s not argue terminology but the philosophy behind whatever we wish to call it.. In our system of justice, all be it as it is, witnesses are protected both during and after a trial. Further more, a witness sometimes is a person who will testify against a co defendant just to cover their own backside. Let’s put thing in perspective for you..if today you witness a crime and fail to take action, any action, then tomorrow you WILL be the victim.. Think about it!
